CMS Releases New Data Schema for Hospital Price Transparency Machine-Readable Files

CMS has released new data requirements to standardize hospital price transparency machine-readable file formatting.

CMS has released new data requirements to standardize hospital price transparency machine-readable file formatting. The schema and a new Corrective Action Plan response template can be found on the official CMS Hospital Price Transparency Resources web page.

CMS will host a webinar on July 26, 2023, to cover the updates and review voluntary sample formats hospitals may use to make standard charges public in a machine-readable file. CMS will present sample formats that use a standardized set of data elements and a new validator tool hospitals can use to test the accuracy of the file(s). See the CMS Hospital Price Transparency Resources for sample formats and data dictionaries.

CMS also seeks volunteers to test a new validator tool for voluntary sample formats. Contact [email protected] with “HPT Validator Tool Testing” in the subject line if interested. You don’t need to use a sample format to volunteer currently.

Effective January 1, 2021, each hospital operating in the U.S. must provide publicly-accessible standard charge information online for the items and services they provide. You may opt to use a voluntary sample format to meet this requirement. Visit Hospital Price Transparency to learn more.

Please contact ClaraPrice for a free price transparency evaluation. ClaraPrice provides fully-managed revenue cycle and compliance solutions for hospitals, including compliant JSON machine-readable service files following the required CMS data schema.
